MOZART and the Chevalier
May 6-8
Francisco Fullana, violin

MOZART Don Giovanni Overture
BOLOGNE Suite from L’Amant anonyme
BOLOGNE Violin Concerto
MOZART Symphony no. 41, Jupiter

One was called “Mozart,” the other was called “Le Mozart Noir” (The Black Mozart). Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, was as renowned in the 18th century as his slightly younger Viennese colleague. The son of an African slave and her white master, he was educated in France and became a beloved violin soloist, conductor, composer, champion fencing master, and hero of the French Revolution. The rare chance to hear his music alongside Mozart’s glorious “Jupiter” Symphony is revelatory and thought-provoking.
