10K stands for 10,000 hours. Author Malcolm Gladwell explains the 10,000-hour rule in his book Outliers. The rule states how it takes 10,000 hours to master a skill or become truly successful in a discipline, professionally and in life.

A common oversight or misconception of Street Dance is that it does not require as much time or dedication as “classical” dance training. In truth, Hip Hop & different Street Dance styles offer the same rigor, structure, and diligence required for any dance genre, art form, or vocation.

10K is the name of the movement, speaking to honor the inherent value of the culture and its art forms.

Hip Hop and Street Dance is an American folk and dance culture, a direct reflection of the sociopolitical climate, times, and communities who originated it. Whether you’re Popping or Breaking, everything from the music, to the movement vocabulary, technique and execution are all directly birthed from the Black and various Latin communities and their circumstances. Acknowledging this history facilitates a relevant artistic language and honest conversation around the experiences of marginalized people or people of color.
