This new nonfiction film brings to light the life and work of Bill Traylor, a remarkable, self-taught African-American artist, who was born into slavery, and whose works on the Black experience were posthumously exhibited at the Smithsonian.

This new nonfiction film brings to light the life and work of a remarkable, self-taught African-American artist who was born into slavery in rural Alabama in 1853 and witnessed the Civil War, Reconstruction, Jim Crow segregation, and the Great Migration before dying in 1949. A sharecropper most of his life, Bill Traylor eventually moved to Montgomery where, between 1939 and 1942, he drew or painted over 1000 pictures of the Black experience.
