Negro League Soul: The Songs and Music of Baseball

Music and songs about baseball are almost as old as the game itself. Take Me Out to the Ballgame is probably the most recognizable but there are many, many more dating back to the 19th century and continued through each decade of the first half of the 20th century.
By some accounts, organists were first introduced in a few ballparks during the 1940s. By the 1960s the organists became a key component of entertainment during games. By the 1970s pre-recorded popular songs and music supplemented the organists and, in some cases, replaced them entirely. This trend continues today, and this presentation will showcase many of the songs and music over the years.
The 2023 programs will continue to highlight how these experiences reflect American society and culture in general, to bring awareness to how the past is always with us – to teach us, and to provide inspiration and encouragement to those facing similar challenges today.
We are thankful to the Cuyahoga County Arts and Culture Council for funds to support our efforts. As a result all programs are free.
