We are a Eucharistic community committed to living the teachings of Jesus. Founded in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council, we share the responsibility to build the Reign of God. As a parish, we are committed to the following values: WORSHIP: Celebrating the Eucharist is central to our community, with full and active participation on the part of each member. We cherish our sacramental life as well as a variety of prayer forms. JUSTICE: We commit ourselves to serve others and reach out to the poor in response to their needs. Our work for justice extends to advocating with integrity for positive change in society and the Church. VISION: Rooted in our faith tradition, we strive to be innovative, prophetic, and courageous in leadership and service. In our commitment to the spiritual formation of each member, we are open to explore new ways to meet the needs among us in response to the signs of our times. DIGNITY: We reverence and welcome each person as a child of God. Embracing and celebrating the diversity of gifts among us, we call everyone to contribute and be served.

Since 1975, The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Community Center of Greater Cleveland has been serving the needs of the LGBT+ community here in Northeastern Ohio. The Center has technically had multiple places that it has called home over the past 40 years. The first installment, the Gay Education and Awareness Resources Foundation (GEAR) met in various members’ homes and utilized the Free Clinic for programs. In 1977, the GEAR had a brief stay in the Coventryard Building before an electrical fire destroyed the building. GEAR then moved briefly downtown to New Dimensions Disco for two years. The next stop was in Tremont in 1980 in the former Bernard’s Furniture Store (now a parking lot next to Grumpy’s.) From 1982 to 1988, GEAR met at a board member’s home in Ohio City before adopted the new name and buildings space as the Lesbian Gay Community Service Center on West 29th. Finally, in 2000, the most recent move was made to Gordon Square and our current name, the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Community Center of Greater Cleveland was adopted in 2005.

For the last 6 years, Negative Space has existed as a home for hundreds of artists, musicians, and spectators.  We built our foundation on the mission to be a platform for artists and a gathering place for the community.  The combination has created an atmosphere unlike any other: a hidden oasis of art and people. Our Team works diligently to empower the unique talent of everyone that comes through our doors, whether that be a professional artist, an aspiring musician, or even just a community patron.  We pride ourselves on operating commission-free, allowing any profit made from an artist’s work to go right back into their pocket.  Our stage continuously elevates local, national, and international talent during our free and open-to-the-public monthly Jam Nights, Sketch Nights, and Open Mic Nights, as well as our vibrant concert series and theatric events. We consider Negative Space to be a true non-profit host for communal exchange.  Not only does our “hidden oasis” inspire participants and audiences alike, but we also learn from what the community brings to us.  Our friendly neighbors have opened our eyes to countless community engagements, fellow non-profits, and exciting opportunities to grow and invest in the Cleveland art community.
