Rainey Institute is where the arts change lives by enriching and inspiring a broad community of learners through excellent, accessible arts programming. Rainey has served children and families in Cleveland for more than 100 years. Founded in 1904 as a settlement house providing social services to Eastern European immigrants, Rainey adjusted its focus in 1966 to reflect the changing needs of the Hough and surrounding neighborhoods it serves. Today, Rainey is dedicated to developing positive growth for Greater Cleveland’s youth through education and engagement in visual and performing arts. Programs occur after-school, on Saturdays, and over the summer to nurture youths’ interests in the arts and develop their social and emotional well-being. In 2023, Rainey opened a second location at the Pivot Center for Art, Dance and Expression in Cleveland’s Clark-Fulton neighborhood to expand our impact to more Cleveland youth and families. We welcome all children ages 1-18, no auditions are required and no student is ever turned away due to an inability to pay. Our current programs include:

  • After School Programs: Provides homework help, a healthy meal and instruction in art, music, drama and dance during weekday afternoons throughout the school year. Our current after-school programs include visual arts, drama, music, dance, and Art Adventures (grades K-2).
  • Saturday Community Arts: Classes in multiple arts areas for students of all ages that include community collaboration with Cleveland based artists and organizations.
  • Preschool Program: Rainey partners with local neighborhood daycares and preschools to provide weekly arts programming for preschoolers, ages 3-5. Children participate in an inquiry-based approach to age-appropriate visual and performing arts lessons.
  • Summer Arts Camp: Multi-week, all-day camp for 3rd-8th graders each summer offering exploratory and mastery classes as well as arts-integrated academics. Students also experience a daily “Tea Time,” field trips, and our Finale Festival at the end of camp.
  • Rainey Creatives Program: Teens undergo leadership training and community service. Culminates with a paid work opportunity at Rainey’s Summer Arts Camp.
