Dinner with a Slice of History- "Flying Solo: The Jerrie Mock Story"

Presented by International Women's Air & Space Museum at International Women's Air & Space Museum

The International Women’s Air & Space Museum’s (IWASM) Dinner with a Slice of History returns in 2024 featuring author Nancy Roe Pimm on Friday, April 19, 2024. “Flying Solo: The Jerrie Mock Story” is made possible thanks to Cuyahoga Arts and Culture (CAC), the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the America 250-Ohio Commission.

In 1964, Jerrie Mock, a housewife from a small town in Ohio, chased her childhood dream of following in the footsteps of her inspiration, Amelia Earhart. In March 1964, she embarked on a historic flight from Columbus, OH, in her Cessna 180 named Charlie. Throughout her 3.5-week-long journey, she encountered high winds, ice, mechanical issues, and more. By April 17, she had flown over 2,300 miles in her single-engine plane, returning to Columbus, making her the first to solo around the world. However, the media was busy generating a ‘competitive’ atmosphere with Mock and her contemporary Joan Merriam Smith. At the same time Mock set out on her record-setting flight, Joan Merriam Smith was also completing her historic solo flight around the world, but that time along the equator – nearly 3,000 miles longer than Mock’s.

Attendees will learn about Mock’s historic flight, explore her contemporaries, and understand her lasting legacy for women in aviation. Make sure to arrive at the museum a little early to explore the new exhibit Around the World set to open in time for the event at the International Women’s Air & Space Museum.
