The Department of Theatre and Dance at Baldwin Wallace University presents a staged reading of Sarah Ruhl’s In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play) directed by Jessie Cope Miller.
This play is by one of our favorite playwrights, a woman with a unique voice who has written plays often chosen for acting and directing scenes. In the Next Room was nominated for three Tony awards, and we are very happy to include this play submitted by theatre students for the season. Set in the nineteenth century with its recent innovation of electricity, it explores questions of female sexuality via the story of a Victorian doctor using the new invention of an electric vibrator as a cure for female “hysteria”. His young wife has much to learn about herself as well, and the story is ultimately one in which love comes to the rescue.
Tickets are free but required for this event.
Seating will be a combination of chairs (first come, first served) and pillows on the floor of the Kleist lobby.
