Accessibility Info

The Brownhoist is an 1880s building and is not currently ADA compliant. Building management is working rapidly on improving accessiblity, but in the meantime we’ve listed information below so folks of all mobility levels may determine if the venue is accessible for them:

There is one concrete step to access the front door and then a flight of stairs to enter the building. An electric chair lift (inspected, 350 lb rating, carries a person only and not a wheelchair) runs parallel to the entry stairs and is available for use.
There is a licensed elevator that goes from the basement up to the 4th floor. It is the oldest operating elevator in Cleveland and is manually run. Story Club staff are able to run the elevator for anyone who would like help using it.
None of the 8 restrooms in The Brownhoist are currently ADA compliant. The restrooms on the second floor are a step above the hallway. The most accessible restroom is on the 3rd floor, next to the elevator. This 3rd floor restroom has a narrow entryway (27″ – ADA recommends 32″), no grab bars, and a standard sink vanity (no room for a wheelchair underneath the sink).
