Hilma af Klint (1862-1944), the Swedish painter now regarded by some as the inventor of abstract art, is the subject of this new biopic from Lasse Hallström, director of My Life as a Dog and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.

Hallström’s daughter Tora portrays the artist as a young woman, and his wife (and Tora’s real-life mother) Lena Olin plays the mature artist. Hilma was also something of a mystic whose rich spiritual life found expression in her colorful paintings.
