UNION CLUB OF CLEVELAND ART COLLECTION

Like other prominent city clubs nationwide, The Union Club of Cleveland has assembled an art collection beyond the traditional mainstay—portraits of its most historically significant members. Over the course of its 150-year history, the Club has acquired through purchase, gifts, and loan-term loans notable examples of American, British, and Continental landscape and genre painting primarily from the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Following the formation of the Union Club Foundation in 2005, the not-for-profit arm of the club entrusted as the “keeper of the Club’s art collection,” the Club’s and its Foundation’s collecting focus has been to enrich and strengthen the Club’s holdings of exceptional work by members of the Cleveland School—both the historical figures who flourished in this region between roughly 1910 and 1960, and more contemporary Cleveland area artists who have explored in a new visual language some of the same subjects, themes and materials as their predecessors. This tour will highlight how, under this initiative, the Club’s art collection had evolved into one that is now strongly self-referential of Cleveland. Included in the tour will be outstanding examples of work by Carl Gaertner, Viktor Schreckengost, Frank Wilcox, Laurence Channing, August Biehle, Tom Roese, George Adomeit and others, underscoring the Club’s goal for its collection: that when you set foot in the Union Club of Cleveland and look around the walls, you won’t think for a moment you are anywhere else.

Highlighted CAP Winner: Laurence Channing (2000)

A light reception will follow the tour.

Additional time info:

Art historian Dr. Marianne Berardi has served as a member of the board of the Union Club Foundation since its inception in 2004 and serves as Art Committee Chair. In this role she and the board have worked to build up the Club’s collection of Cleveland School artists, and host events which highlight the rich artistic legacy that flourishes in Cleveland. Marianne has written two catalogues of the Club’s art collection, the first being a highlights handbook entitled Faces and Places: A collection in the making, which was published to coincide with the Union Club’s 2004 ambitious restoration project. The second is a comprehensive catalogue of artworks belonging to the Club, as well as those on gracious extended loan from the Western Reserve Historical Society, which is dispersed throughout the club in large blue leather binders.
