A.I. Art with Jamal Collins and Alfred Cowger

Presented by Artists Archives of the Western Reserve at Artists Archives of the Western Reserve

Only a few years ago, art created by computers sounded like science-fiction. Now, all it takes is a scroll on social media to encounter this latest art world phenomenon. But how does artificial intelligence create art in the first place? And where do traditional artists fit into the equation?

On Saturday, April 22nd, 2:00 – 3:00pm, join the Artists Archives for a fascinating conversation with artist/designer Jamal Collins and lawyer Alfred Cowger which not only explores how artificial intelligence is being used to produce artwork, but also investigates A.I.’s impact on notions of originality and ownership.

Jamal Collins has over a decade of experience as a designer, educator and mentor to budding artists in underserved Cleveland neighborhoods. “Artificial intelligence has the power to do some incredible things, but it will never be able to fully replace the ingenuity of the human mind,” Collins reflects. “As a designer, I’ve always used cutting edge technology to communicate my vision. At its core, A.I. is just the latest tool to enhance and augment our creativity. It’s the new gold rush. So, let’s embrace the power of technology, but never forget the value and importance of our own artistry.”

Cowger, whose practice includes intellectual property law, has written a number of articles and podcasts on legal issues related to A.I., as well as a book focused on the impact of algorithms on civil rights. “Artificial intelligence is, literally, creating a whole new world of art,” Cowger explains. “Algorithms are creating ‘original’ art, sometimes without actual input by humans, and sometimes based upon a database of existing art.  Does work created by artificial intelligence qualify as real ‘art’, and if so, who is the artist?  Are the artists whose works the algorithms reference entitled to claim copyright violations or some ownership? These are just some examples of the fascinating ramifications of artificial intelligence on the art world.”

A.I. Art with Jamal Collins and Alfred Cowger will be held in-person in the Artists Archives gallery and will include an audience Q&A. For more information on the presenters visit artistsarchives.org
