Cleveland Kurentovanje | “LGBT_SLO 1984” - N. American Film Premiere & Roundtable

Presented by Slovenian Museum and Archives at LaSalle Theatre

How did Slovenia, a small Alpine country, become a center for LGBT activism and queer culture? This new documentary reveals 35 years of the LGBT movement in Slovenia, starting in 1984 with the Magnus Gay Culture Festival, the launch pad for a greater social movement within the country.  That vibrant scene built the picturesque capital, Ljubljana, into a haven of progressiveness and inclusion within the former Yugoslavia, only to encounter pushback after Slovenia declared independence.

This fascinating and rebellious side of Slovenia was not widely known until now. The events documented in this film led the way for Slovenia to become the first Eastern European country (and one of the few in the world) to grant full marriage equality for same-sex couples. Cleveland is home to the most Slovenians outside of Europe.

Meet Slovenian director Boris Petkovič. Doors open at 6:30pm. The evening kicks off at 7pm with a panel introduction. After the film, the director takes questions. 87 minutes. English subtitles. Not Rated – Film contains mature content. Free admission with ticket.

This event is made possible by The Slovenian Consulate General of Slovenia, Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Culture with coordination and support from the LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland and the LaSalle Theatre.
