Annual Meeting of the Members

2nd Annual John Hellman Memorial Lecture

Fri. Feb 10, 2023  @ 6pm

CDA Members will elect officers and directors and will learn about the finances of our nonprofit organization in a brief annual meeting. The lecture will soon follow.

Dr Seth Pevnick will present the 2nd Annual John Hellman Memorial Lecture, named for one of the founding members of Cleveland Decorative Arts who sadly died in 2021. Dr Pevnick will speak about Small Classical Bronzes at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Details are on the reverse.

All attendees must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19.  As usual, cash bar from 6pm and program begins at 630pm. Dinner is $65 pp.

Dr Seth Pevnick is Chair of European Art from Classical Antiquity to 1800 and Curator of Greek and Roman Art at CMA.

He holds a PhD in archaeology from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a BA in classical archaeology from Dartmouth College. The recipient of fellowships at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (2006–7) and the American Academy in Rome (2019), Pevnick is a committee member of the Archaeological Institute of America, a board member of the Cleveland Archaeological Society, and an adjunct art history professor at Case Western Reserve University. Prior to joining CMA, Pevnick worked at the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Tampa Museum of Art.

This talk will provide a brief overview of the outstanding collection of small ancient Greek, Etruscan, and Roman bronzes on view at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Sometimes overlooked by visitors due to their small size, several of these sculptures are considered masterpieces of their types. Along with figural sculptures made for votive or honorific reasons, these include ornamental handles and other elements once connected to bronze vessels, mirrors, incense burners, and other functional objects.
