Here’s the feature made by long-banned—but defiant—Iranian master Jafar Panahi (The White Balloon, This Is Not a Film) before his re-arrest and imprisonment in July. (He’s currently serving a six-year sentence.)

Iran, 2022, Jafar Panahi
Panahi stars in the movie as a version of himself, playing a Persian film director, forbidden from both making movies and leaving the country, who surreptitiously shoots a new work in Turkey which he directs remotely from a rented room in a rural village on the Iranian side of the Turkish border. Panahi’s film-within-a-film focuses on two persecuted Persian lovers, while his involvement with another set of lovers in his adopted village brings the wrath of tradition and patriarchy down upon him. “As Iranian women rise up against their misogynist bullies, this is a good time to watch Jafar Panahi’s latest film…No Bears is a complex, mysterious metafiction about the anguish of Iran.” –The Guardian (UK). Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. DCP. 106 min. www.nobears.film
