Tree Steward Training Series 2023

Tree Steward Training Series 2023

Presented by Western Reserve Land Conservancy at Online/Virtual Space

Western Reserve Land Conservancy’s Tree Steward Training program will teach you how to plant, care for, and maintain trees. A variety of topics will be covered including the benefits of trees, tree biology, intro to tree identification, environmental equity issues, planting best practices, young tree training, and more. You will be learning from not only the Western Reserve Land Conservancy’s tree team but a variety of guest arborists from the region as well. Training content will include educational video components and presentations, breakout discussions, and question and answer periods.

Requirements of the program include attendance at all parts of the series:

Part 1 – Review of Cleveland Tree Plan, Urban Forestry:  This class describes the research informing the goals of the Cleveland Tree Plan, and delves into the environmental, health, economic, and social benefits of trees in urban areas.

Part 2 – Basics of Tree Biology:  The second class of the program reviews the physiology of trees, from roots and trunk to branches and leaves. By reviewing the biology of trees, participants will better understand what trees need from their caretakers.

Part 3 – Planting and Maintenance:  Day three of the course is a detailed, hands-on look at how to plant a tree, as well as maintenance and care of young trees.

Part 4 – Trees and Volunteers:  The final component of the program is a detailed training on becoming a community urban forester to take action in managing Cleveland’s urban forest.

The Tree Steward Training program will also include a hands-on, outdoor workshop focused on tree pruning and maintenance, as well as hold a community tree planting in a low-canopy neighborhood of Cleveland. Tree steward graduates will also be invited to future advanced training workshops, community volunteer events and celebrations, and more. The Land Conservancy has trained 300 tree stewards who have gone on to create neighborhood tree coalitions and organize plantings. Through this innovative and engaging program, we are empowering Cleveland residents to make a difference through hands-on learning.
