Part of Slovenian Days in Cleveland 2022, this exhibition, reception, and gallery conversation explore the work of noted Slovenian artist Lučka Koščak.
This exhibition introduces Cleveland audiences to the work of celebrated Slovenian sculptor Lučka Koščak (1957–2022) by showcasing the series of intimate terra-cotta busts she called Angels. At first glance, these quiet figures, on loan from the artist’s family, challenge our traditional expectations about what an angel should look like—they’re not airborne, and they certainly don’t have wings, billowing robes, or chubby little legs. Instead, with their closed eyes and meditative feel, they evoke a feeling of contemplation and peace that’s at once spiritual and very human, and that the artist worked to share with viewers in many of her monumental sculptures as well.
Join us for a reception and gallery conversation in which we’ll look at these works closely, explore them together, and learn more about Koščak’s life and creative practice.
