Loving Couples

Presented by Cleveland Institute of Art and The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque at The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque

Sweden, 1964, Mai Zetterling

Ingmar Bergman regulars Harriet Andersson, Gunnel Lindblom, Gunnar Björnstrand, and Eva Dahlbeck star in the first feature directed by Swedish actress turned moviemaker Mai Zetterling. Set in 1914 Stockholm, the work centers on three women—a housemaid, a farm wife, and a young aristocrat—who, while waiting to give birth at a maternity hospital, think back on the circumstances and relationships that landed them there. Shot by Sven Nykvist, the movie caused an uproar for its frank depictions of sexuality, lesbianism, and childbirth, and was banned at the Cannes Film Festival. “One of the most ambitious debuts since Citizen Kane.” –Kenneth Tynan. Cleveland revival premiere. Subtitles. Restored DCP. 118 min. Special admission $11; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $8. No passes.
