Bigas Luna’s Iberian Trilogy

JAMÓN, JAMÓN

Spain, 1992, Bigas Luna

A teenage Penêlope Cruz (in her feature film debut) stars with Javier Bardem and Stefania Sandrelli (The Conformist) in this vulgar, ribald Spanish melodrama, the first part of Bigas Luna’s “Iberian Trilogy.” (Parts 2 & 3 show, respectively, on 6/18 & 6/25.) Set in a small Spanish desert town, the movie chronicles how the mother of a wealthy young man sabotages her son’s relationship with a factory girl by hiring a hunky underwear model and aspiring bullfighter to seduce her away from him. The title translates as Ham, Ham and the movie conjoins human beings’ appetite for food with their desire for sex. “A hysterically sombre sex farce.” –Time Out Film Guide. Adults only! Subtitles. 35mm print from Europe. 95 min. Special admission $13; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $10. No passes or twofers.
