United States | 1985 | Peter Bogdanovich

We resume theatrical screenings (after a 15½-month intermission!) with an Oscar-winning classic in its extended director’s cut that’s never been shown theatrically in Cleveland and is unavailable on any streaming service. Released the year the Cinematheque started showing movies and sporting a title that could not be more timely (make sure you familiarize yourself with our new Covid protocols, by the way), Peter Bogdanovich’s Mask proved an irresistible choice for our reopening feature. Plus it’s on 35mm film! Cher (Best Actress, Cannes 1985), Eric Stoltz, Sam Elliott, and Laura Dern star in this moving account of a teen with a disfiguring disease and his steadfast and supportive mother. The director’s cut is seven minutes longer than the version released to theaters. It also contains the Bruce Springsteen songs that Bogdanovich could not include initially—forcing him to substitute Bob Seger tunes. Cleveland theatrical premiere. 127 min. Special admission $14; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, and those age 25 & under $11. No passes or twofers. Capacity limited; advance tickets advised.
