The History of Lower Lake

The History of Lower Lake

Presented by Shaker Historical Society and Doan Brook Watershed Partnership at Online/Virtual Space

The Brook has coursed through Northeast Ohio since the retreat of the glaciers. Lower Lake itself was created 185 years ago when the Shakers dammed Doan Brook to operate a sawmill for several decades until the colony dissolved in 1889. In 1896, the Shaker Land Company of Buffalo deeded the 279 acres to the City of Cleveland “for park purposes only.” Learn about the rich history of Lower Lake from when it was a forested brook, to its regional use as a Canoe Club 1907-1976, to its designation as an Audubon Important Bird Area.

This program is courtesy of the Doan Brook Watershed Partnership with support from the Shaker Historical Society, Shaker Heights Public Library, Heights Libraries, and the Cleveland Heights Historical Society.
