Reciprocity: Back Back and Forth

During her residency, Mildred Beltré will continue her exploration of text, textile, and the Black body through an exhibition/workshop space. Integrating text, figure-based drawings, weaving, cross-stitch, and beading, Beltré creates multimedia works that employ domesticity as a means of examining equity and intersectionality.

The Origin of Form

Expanding her ongoing investigation into histories of reproductive technology, Martha Poggioli will partner with the Dittrick Medical History Center and Sears think[box] at Case Western Reserve University during her residency in Cleveland. The culminating exhibition at SPACES will combine research findings alongside new sculptural works initiated during her time at the Arts/Industry Residency in Foundry at Kohler during 2020. The project invites audiences to enter into this rich, nuanced and hidden world and discover these prosthetics of interiority. The Origin of Form was supported, in part, by the Foundation for Contemporary Arts.

Coming Suddenly, Passing Strangely

There is a moment on every journey when it becomes impossible to quantify how much farther we have to go. The challenge comes in recognizing the amorphousness of expectations and the malleability of experience. What was before simply is no longer. Time moves ahead, often without explanation.

In this collaboration with Columbia College Chicago (CCC), we recognize the entangled concepts of journey and destination. The collection of time-based works by CCC alumni showcase different paths and organizing principles. Each has its own methods and strikes a unique chord. Together they form constellations, but also growth charts.
