Principles of Poetry with Michelle R. Smith

Explore the nuance of the poetry world with Michelle R. Smith. Michelle R. Smith is a writer, educator, cultural facilitator, and native Clevelander. She is the programming associate for Literary Cleveland and a teaching artist for Lake Erie Ink. She is the author of the poetry collections Ariel in Black (2015) and The Vagina Analogues (2020). She has been published in poemmemoirstory, Meridians: feminism, race, transnationalism, The Normal School, and The Gasconade Review. She has been a featured reader, instructor, and panelist at The Lakewood Public Library, The East Cleveland Public Library, The Cuyahoga County Public Library, The Cleveland Museum of Arts, Cleveland Drafts – Brews + Prose, PNC Fairfax Connection, Case Western Reserve University’s Writers House, and Literary Cleveland’s Inkubator Conference. She is also the creator, co-producer, and director of BLAX MUSEUM, an annual performance showcase for Northeast Ohio artists open to all forms and dedicated to honoring notable black figures in American history and culture.

Comics Journaling with Matt Haberbusch

Create comics about your own life! Explore ways to use a comics journal as a place of creativity, a way to process your thoughts, and a companion to your daily life. Materials needed: an empty composition or spiral notebook, your favorite pen, and either notecards or blank paper you can tear into notecard-sized pieces. Inspired by Lynda Barry’s book Making Comics, artist Matt Haberbusch will take you through a creative journey to start you journaling and drawing in a new way.

Amy Schwabauer
Host/Writer

Amy Schwabauer is a Cleveland based actor, playwright, and teaching artist. Recent credits include: Writing and performing her one woman show “This is NOT About My Dead Dog” at the Borderlight International Theatre and Fringe Festival Cleveland (July 2019), presenting her latest work in progress “The Prettiest Little Burden” in PEI, Canada (June 2019), touring “The Events of the Warren County Fair as Observed by a Young Astronaut”, a table top, toy theater adventure co-written and co-performed with Mike Geither (2015-2018).  She regularly writes 10-minute plays for Cleveland’s Manhattan Project staged reading series. Playing ‘Feste’ in “Twelfth Night” with the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival (2018). In 2017, she was named Cleveland’s Best Actress by ‘Cleveland Scene Magazine’ for her performance in “This is Not About my Dead Dog”.  She is a graduate of Cleveland State University’s Theatre Arts Program.

Ray McNiece
Host/Guest Speaker

Ray McNiece is the author of nine books of poems and monologues, most recently Love Song for Cleveland, a collaboration with photographer Tim Lachina and Breath Burns Away, New Haiku. The Orlando Sentinel reporting on Ray’s solo theater piece “Us — Talking Across America” at the Fringe Festival called him “a modern day descendant of Woody Guthrie. He has a way with words and a wry sense of humor.” He toured Russia with Yevgeny Yevtushenko, appeared on Good Morning, Russia and performed at the Moscow Polytech, the Russian Poets’ Hall of Fame where he was dubbed ‘the American Mayakovsky.’ He has toured Italy twice with legendary beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti. He fronts the blues rock band, Tongue-in-Groove. He was appointed Poet Laureate of Cleveland Heights in April 2020.

Michelle R. Smith
Creative Writing Teacher

Michelle R. Smith is a poet, blogger, educator, and cultural facilitator living in and working out of Twinsburg, OH. She has been published in poemmemoirstory; Meridians: feminism, race, transnationalism; My Soul to His Spirit: Soulful Expressions from Black Daughters to Their Fathers; Guide to Kulchur Creative Journal; Kulchur Magazine; Howl, 2016! Poems, Rants, and Essays on the Election; The Normal School; and Gasconade Review. One of her favorite poems she ever wrote is called “#blackgirl”: I am not magic but/I am made of mettle/and still able to levitate. She considers creative writing not just a means of personal expression, but a tool for political empowerment and vehicle for social change.

Matt Haberbusch
Creative Writing Teacher

Matt grew up making comics but stopped in high school. He discovered the world of alternative and independent comics while earning his BS and MS in electrical engineering at Case Western Reserve University. Most importantly, he found Lynda Barry’s playful and liberating works on making and teaching comics. Matt now works as an engineer by day and makes and teaches comics on evenings and weekends. He enjoys the nervous creative energy of timed group drawing exercises and also co-leads a public local comics making group for adults, Comics in the Circle. He has made comics for Cleveland Scene, Vagabond Comics, CWRU’s The Observer, and he has exhibited self published work at Genghis Con.
