On May 1st, watch the premier of this video at Cleveland Public Theatre’s Station Hope celebration. This video tells the story of Sara Bagby the last fugitive of southern slavery, ordered to be retuned to Virginia, prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. The order for her return to slavery was issued in accordance with the federal Fugitive Slave Law by Cleveland Judge Daniel Tilden, an abolitionist when representing Ohio residents in the United States Congress. This video offers a point-counterpoint presentation of Bagby’s passionate desire for freedom, with Judge Tilden’s recitation of the requirements of the Fugitive Slave Law, “My hands are tied.” This video was produced with the generous support of the residents of Cuyahoga County and Cuyahoga Arts and Culture.
