We are proud to feature two Slovenian films with English Subtitles as part of this year’s Cleveland Kurentovanje! These films have been made possible through the generous support of the Slovenian Film Center, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, Vertigo Ljubljana and the Consulate General of The Republic of Slovenia in Cleveland.

My Last Year as a Loser / Ne Bom Več Luzerka (original title)

Špela is almost thirty. She graduated with a degree in art history, and like many millennials around the globe, struggles with chronic underemployment. Her friends moved abroad and do not intend to return, but Špela stubbornly insists on staying in Ljubljana while her social life takes place over Skype. When she ends up on her disappointed parents’ couch without any money, work, or company, she realises that growing up is more difficult than she had thought.

This 2018 comedy/drama won a number of awards at the Festival of Slovenian Film, including the main prize — Vesna Award for Best Film, as well as Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress for the main character amongst other awards.

Real Pests / To so gadi (original title)

Real Pests is a light-hearted comedy about a widower Štebe, who works as a bus driver and lives with his five adolescent sons and an elderly maid Rozi in Ljubljana. The boys are wild, constantly playing pranks on neighbors and Rozi, who is fed up with their behavior which earned them the nickname “gadi” (“pests”, or literally “vipers”). One day, Rozi fulfills her threat and leaves for home in the countryside despite being extremely fond of the family. Right then, Rozi’s young niece Meri comes to town and is offered a place to stay by Štebe until she can find a job. The attractive Meri cannot compete with Rozi at housekeeping, but she immediately wraps all the boys around her finger. Antics ensue!

This 1977 comedy was one of the most successful films in Slovenia, holding the domestic box office record for almost 15 years.
