Community Culture Night: Catherine Butler

Presented by Art House at Online/Virtual Space

Catherine Butler has been an artist for as long as she can remember. She started taking art classes in the 4th grade and when she was in 8th grade she taught her first art classes to 1st
and 2nd graders at her elementary school as the school had no art teacher. Since then Butler has continued on both as an artist and art educator. Although she received her BFA majoring in jewelry and silversmithing from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1981, she has always continued to explore other media from drawing, sculpture, and ceramics, to performance art, installation, animation and printmaking. She has taught young people’s classes at both the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Cleveland Institute of Art, children’s and adult art classes and workshops at Heights Arts, metals workshops at Flux Metal Arts, metalsmithing at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, and be a participating artist in the Artists in Education Program of the Ohio Arts Council. She currently is the Chair of Visual Arts and teaches Upper School Art at Laurel School in Shaker Heights. Butler has also been the recipient of two Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowships and has work in these selected collections: The Danner Foundation’s Die Neue Sammlung which is permanently housed in the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, Germany, The Racine Art Museum in Racine, Wisconsin, and the Ohio Craft Museum in Columbus, Ohio.
