Dear Comrades!

Dear Comrades!

Presented by Cleveland Institute of Art and The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque at Online/Virtual Space

Russia | 2020 | Andrei Konchalovsky

Russia’s official submission for this year’s Oscar for Best Int’l Feature Film exposes a long-suppressed Khrushchev-era atrocity—a 1962 massacre of striking factory workers in a small Russian industrial town. Shot in b&w and in the old 4×3 aspect ratio, this powerful historical drama (which is not without dark humor) relays the events through the eyes of a mother who is a loyal Communist Party apparatchik. From the veteran director of Runaway Train and Siberiade. “Perversely beautiful and coldly furious…Meticulous and majestic, epic in scope and tattoo-needle intimate in effect…Excoriating proof that not all filmmakers are made sloppy or slipshod by anger.” –Variety. “Konchalovsky’s masterpiece.” –The New Yorker. Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. 120 min.
