Hip Hop Dance Workshop with 10K Movement

Presented by Karamu House at Online/Virtual Space

Celebrate the last Friday in February with an exciting and interactive online hip hop class with 10K Movement!

So, what does 10K mean? In the book, Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell states that it takes 10,000 hours to mast a skill or become truly successful in life.

Samuel McIntosh was given the name “10K” by a mentor/teacher because of his drive, determination, and diligence while training in Popping. He has since performed, taught and competed around the country, as well as internationally, and learned from notable pioneers of Hip Hop and Street Dance culture. He quickly found that Street styles provide the same rigor, structure, and discipline, as necessary for any dance genre, (a common oversight or misconception of Street Dance being that it does not require as much time or dedication as “classical” training). 10K is the name of the movement, as it seamlessly speaks to honor the culture and the art form.

The 10K Movement is a Street Dance platform designed to give students, young artists, and the larger community an in-depth, educational experience. Focusing on Street Dance and Hip Hop styles—including Popping, Boogaloo, Animation, Hip Hop, Rocking, and House dance–students will be able to utilize the techniques and skills through performance and events, individual competition or battles, as well as push and encourage each other to persevere in their self-expression.

Join Karamu House for this FREE “In the Tradition” program to celebrate Black History Month. Our “In the Tradition” community program series features free and culturally-specific offerings that speak directly to the African American experience throughout the year, including MLK Day, Kwanzaa, and Juneteenth, among others.
