Chloé Zhao’s third feature Nomadland was one of the most praised and honored films of 2020 and is probably the frontrunner for this year’s Oscar for Best Picture. Zhao’s promise and talent were first revealed in her acclaimed debut feature Songs My Brothers Taught Me, which showed only once in Cleveland. Evocatively shot on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, the laid back movie focuses on two Lakota teens living with their single mother. This brother and sister are very close but take different paths after learning of the death of their long-absent, rodeo-cowboy dad. “A wispy but charming story of two slightly adrift kids who just happen to live on a reservation.” –A.V.
