Carte Blanche! / Turner: Nature Untamed, Passion Unbridled (Postponed)

Presented by ChamberFest Cleveland at Cleveland Institute of Music - Mixon Hall

“Every time I see a William Turner painting,” says Denes Varjon, “I immediately enter his wonderful world of colors and expression.” The pianist’s program begins with a contemporary of Turner’s: Beethoven. We observe the 250th Anniversary of Beethoven’s birth with his very first opus, a passionate and stormy piece that not only matched the swirling turbulence in Turner’s works but heralded the arrival of a radical new voice. Britten’s Sonata ranges from humorously whispering to dazzlingly bright. Venice was an important inspiration for Turner, who breathtakingly portrayed the connection between sea and sky. Liszt was a great painter through his music, and you can easily imagine Turner’s monumental works in the atmosphere of Venezia e Napoli. Dohnányi’s Quintet journeys from one of music’s saddest keys to resolve in a wonderful harmony of lightness.
