Carte Blanche! / Bosch: Earthly Delight/Deadly Sin (Postponed)

Carte Blanche! / Bosch: Earthly Delight/Deadly Sin (Postponed)

Presented by ChamberFest Cleveland at Cleveland Institute of Music - Mixon Hall

Patrick Castillo immerses us in Hieronymus Bosch’s famed Garden of Earthly Delights. Filled with debauchery, it reflects the 16th Century artist’s “preoccupation with morality as viewed through a religious lens and portrayed with wild psychedelic flair and macabre humor.” Milhaud traveled to America’s own Garden of Earthly Delights – 1920s New York City – where he encountered jazz and later wrote a jazzy score for a ballet about the world’s creation. Castillo’s own work portrays three of the seven deadly sins: envy, sloth, and – what Bosch may have considered the most dangerous one – lust. Janacek’s surreal Concertino depicts a night owl and other nocturnal animals in an argumentative free-for-all. Scriabin’s dissonant sonata represents Bosch’s theme of sin and damnation. The program rousingly concludes with the Franck Quintet, a torrid and throbbing embodiment of lust.
