Carte Blanche! / Bierstadt: Sweeping Landscapes, Swelling Soundscapes (Postponed)

Presented by ChamberFest Cleveland at Cleveland Institute of Music - Mixon Hall

Two large-scale chamber works by Brahms and Chausson encompass sweeping vistas – “broad landscapes in music” – that remind Orion Weiss of Albert Bierstadt’s breathtaking landscapes of the American West. Liszt’s tranquil Paysage (“Landscape”) also came to mind, as did his darker Nuages gris (“Gray Clouds”) written many years later and foreshadowing the direction much 20th Century music would take. Brahms wrote his first lilting Serenade as an octet but realized its symphonic qualities and expanded it for an even larger ensemble. Chausson struggled with self-doubt and is said to have pronounced his newly completed Concert a failure, but the soaring, tuneful work is now considered by many to be his masterpiece. Ironically, he slammed his bicycle into a brick wall and died at 44.
