Carte Blanche! / Hesse & Bourgeois: Beauty In Many Forms (Postponed)

Carte Blanche! / Hesse & Bourgeois: Beauty In Many Forms (Postponed)

Presented by ChamberFest Cleveland at Unknown

To Yura Lee, “Beauty comes in many forms: rawness of emotion; directness in delivery; severity of contrasts.” Inspired by the powerful works of female sculptors Eva Hesse and Louise Bourgeois, Ms. Lee created a program that boasts three female composers “who found unique and courageous beauty in their art by embracing extremes.” The celestial compositions of German Abbess Hildegarde of Bingen have achieved a popularity in the 21st Century she certainly never imagined in the 12th. Shostakovich predicted early on that the work of his student Ustvolskaya would achieve world fame. Her spare, piercing Trio seems light-years away from the more romantic one Shostakovich penned at just sixteen. Mustonen’s unique sound world triggers our emotions, running the gamut from the faintest whispers to the most yearning screams. Bacewicz heroically gave underground concerts in Warsaw during World War II; her raw, propulsive Quintet demands to be heard.
