Roman Rabinovich curates an evening of music inspired by the works of Diego Velazquez for ChamberFest Cleveland’s ninth season, Carte Blanche!
Among the world’s most famous paintings is Diego Velazquez’s Las Meninas, a 17th Century depiction of Spanish royalty that’s full of mirrored reflections, illusions and intrigues. Roman Rabinovich starts his scintillating program with royal music by Purcell, with its own special curiosities. The flavors of Spain emerge through the sensuous Violin Sonata by Granados and the fiery rhythms of Ravel’s Alborada del gracioso. He continues with thoughtful reflections by two of music’s royalty: Bach and Beethoven. Bach’s final tour de force, The Art of Fugue, uses mirrors and reflective imitations to mesmerizing effect. Beethoven originally dedicated his Eroica Symphony to Napoleon Bonaparte, but dropped the tribute when the Frenchman declared himself Emperor. Hearing this rarely performed piano quartet arrangement of the “monumental embodiment of individualism and the human spirit” is an extraordinary opportunity.
