Carte Blanche! / Kokoschka: The Power Of Music (Postponed)

Carte Blanche! / Kokoschka: The Power Of Music (Postponed)

Presented by ChamberFest Cleveland at Cleveland Institute of Music - Mixon Hall

Oskar Kokoschka considered Bach, Mozart and Beethoven “demigods,” was friends with Hindemith and Berg, and reflected on his stormy affair with Mahler’s widow in his painting The Power of Music. The Cohens, inspired by “the edgy, jagged and wildly colorful style” of this leader of Viennese expressionism, here champion music from early Brahms to early Xenakis. The tranquil beauty of Hindemith’s Clarinet Quartet belies the turmoil he surely felt as he left his German homeland in 1938. Xenakis’s work features staccato strokes and bright colors, much like Kokoschka’s art, and might well have you dancing in your seat. One of Berg’s love songs fascinatingly straddles the Vienna of old and new – the former version composed in his early Romantic style, the latter in his mature Expressionistic language. The program closes with an impassioned Brahms sextet that harkens back to the Romanticism of pre-war Vienna.
