Shai Wosner curates an evening of music inspired by the works of Mark Rothko for ChamberFest Cleveland’s ninth season, Carte Blanche!
Inspired by the luminous works of Mark Rothko, Israeli-American pianist Shai Wosner leads us from sunrise to sunset, and “from the simplest representation to the meditative to the metaphorical.” The rising theme with which Haydn’s radiant quartet opens earned it the sobriquet “Sunrise.” John Luther Adams was directly inspired both by Rothko’s translucent fields, which reminded him of the Alaskan landscape outside his window, and an Inuit song about the first sunrise after the long, dark winter – “the light that fills the world.” The composer responded with shimmering music that imbues the impression of light with spiritual overtones. You have likely heard parts of Schubert’s gorgeous trio in Kubrick’s “Barry Lyndon” and other movie scores. Its middle movement was no doubt inspired by the Swedish song “The Sun Is Setting” – a poignant farewell to hopeful dreams, vanishing with the sun that sets over mountain peaks.
