Medieval Manuscripts and Illuminated Letters (Canceled)

Medieval Manuscripts and Illuminated Letters (Canceled)

Presented by Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory and Educational Foundation at The Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory and Educational Foundation

Canceled due to COVID-19.

There are three key elements of Medieval manuscripts: golden-ratio-based page design, blackletter calligraphy, and illumination. Combined, these elements create a beautiful written piece that truly lights up the page. After a historical overview, you will learn how to plan a folio using Tschichold’s Golden Canon, hand-draw versals (capital letters) on parchment, gild versals with genuine gold leaf, and paint versals using traditional Medieval colors. By the end of the day, you will complete two to three versals.

About the instructor:
Madison Bennett is a lettering artist from Cleveland, OH. She’s currently an MFA Candidate at the University of Iowa Center for the Book, where she studies calligraphy, letterpress printing, bookbinding, and papermaking.
