Mokuhanga is a long practiced woodblock technique that has represented Japanese imagery for centuries. It consists of a series of woodblocks that are carved and then printed with water based block ink to create a soft representation of color throughout a print. Throughout the weekend, you will learn how to design, carve, and print a small edition of mokuhanga prints on traditional Eastern paper. This workshop pairs well with our Japanese Papermaking workshop scheduled for the week prior.

About the instructor:
Linda J. Beeman is a multi-award winning artist, instructor and curator who works exclusively in the ancient art of Mokuhanga – Japanese woodblock printmaking. Because of the rarity of mokuhanga instruction outside of Japan, Linda is sought after for workshops at universities, art schools, and privately, across the country most recently at Interlochen Center for the Arts (Michigan), Center for Creative Studies (Detroit), and the Virginia Museum of Fine Art (Richmond). Linda has traveled extensively in Japan and is the Past President of the Michigan/Shiga Sister State Board. She is also the founder and director of Art From the Lakes, an artist exchange program between Shiga, Japan and Michigan.
