Presented by Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project at BOP STOP

ABOUT RE:SOUND

Re:Sound is an annual 4-day new and experimental music festival presented by Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project (CUSP). Traversing the city, concerts take place in some of Cleveland’s most intimate spaces and bring together pioneering local, regional, and national artists, strengthening the new music community in Cleveland and demonstrating the city’s unique qualities that make it an ideal place for new art to flourish.

ANNA ELDER
Andrew Hamilton – O’ROURKE (2013)
Brian Riordan – Succubus (2019)
“At about ten, I just started writing music. It was a natural thing – just spontaneous, it was never a decision – it’s play. You know, all children draw, so it’s as natural as drawing. I’m the son of a Methodist minister, so I was brought up with lots of hymns all the time. My mother says I was always singing…”, say Andrew Hamilton. O’ROURKE explores everyday vocal sounds that become a playful hymn in which the vocalist is both the soloist and the accompanist for their own piece. The text explores themes of life and death with words from from a tombstone in Ashby, MA, text from St. Theresa of Avila, and Adittapariyaya Sutta’s “The Fire Sermon.”
Riordon writes, “did you know it’s possible to write music for soprano and live processing without angelic reverb? Succubus was written as a way to explore underutilized real-time vocal processing techniques. This piece was commissioned by Anna Elder for Re:Sound 2020.”
