LEAH ASHER
improvisation
Asher’s practice as an improvisor explores the magic of creating intricate textures, unexpected sonic effects, and rich harmonic spaces on acoustic violin. With influences from her background in classical and contemporary performance and composition, Asher weaves together sets of distinct sonic structures into a congruous new work with every performance.

CHRISTOPHER CLARINO AND JONATHAN NUSSMAN
Georges Aperghis – Récitation 11 (1977)
Aristéa Mellos – Web of Threads (2019-20)
Georges Aperghis – Retrouvailles (2013)

Christopher Clarino and Jonathan Nussman explore the palpability of gesture, comprehension, abstraction and accessibility in Music for Languages. Following in the footsteps of John Cage and Mauricio Kagel, Georges Aperghis may be best known for his serious, yet whimsical style of experimental musical theater that eschews both theatrical and musical tradition. Récitation 11 (1977) is taken from Aperghis\\\’ extensive collection of works for solo voice. Built from nonsensical sentence fragments placed within an expanding pyramid structure, Récitation 11 decouples its French text from any direct linguistic meaning, allowing rhythmic and melodic material to emerge.

Aristéa Mellos’ Web of Threads (2019-20) borrows material from Ovid’s 8 AD magnum opus Metamorphoses. Using the dichotomy of Arachne and Minerva as allegory, Mellos pits the visual and sonic forces of American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English, theater and music, and the corporeality of percussion and ASL against one another in this new work for signing percussionist.

Aperghis\\\’ Retrouvailles (2013) consists of a hodgepodge of spoken French, Greek and nonsense word fragments that, when paired with identifiable gesture and inflection, beg for meaning.
