Bringing the Arts Alive - Community Revitalizing Project

Bringing the Arts Alive - Community Revitalizing Project

Presented by Gardening in the District at Urban Pocket Park

This event has been canceled or postponed in response to COVID-19 and the government’s guidance to limit mass gatherings at this time. Please contact the event organizer for additional details including ticketing or rescheduling information.

The community and youths have begun to reconstruct two vacant lots, which so far have picnic
tables, benches, fruit trees, a fence and a free library house along with some raised beds to garden and
an Urban Art Studio. The next step on beautifying the lots is to bring forth art and culture. There will be
artists that will create murals on the fence surrounding the lot. There will be appealing imagery that will inspire and
empower people through vivid illustrations.

Once a project is underway, we continuously talk with the community to let them know what steps in
directions and once the project get started we are passing out flyers and sign up sheets to the
community to get there participation. Once the project or activity starts we supply refreshments and make
sure that the kids and the community are having a good time defining, revitalizing and rebuilding their
community, with the assistance from Gardening in the District.

The community and youths can take part by helping with the benches and tables, which we created
from wood, by painting games like checkers and tic tac toe. They will stain the benches and
fences, apply sealant, then paint it for a finishing touch. We will also paint on the two art
easels and corn hole games!

This project will allow the youth and community to engage with one another, and meet new people;
allowing them a rewarding feeling, that they where the ones who brought about change to their
neighborhood. It also allows everyone a place to hangout, to come fellowship, study, or if they just want
to get away. It also benefits the community by having a place where people can hold events and is free
and available anytime with lots of arts and culture to inspire and unite a community. Being in
this art filled space will give the community a feel of togetherness and peace

Art gives people a sense of belonging, encourages expression, and gives the community something to
share with others. Art can take away the negative thoughts that may be going through people lives,
allowing there mood to change and have positive thought.
