Mural unveiling

Presented by Sankofa Fine Art Plus at Franklin D Roosevelt Academy

In 2019 Sankofa Fine Art Plus, with funding from the George Gund Foundation, brought together kids from the Glenville Boys and Girls Club of Cleveland and Cuyahoga Juvenile Court, and police officers from the Cleveland Police Department Black Shield Club to design and paint a monumental sized mural.  The program was designed to dispel some of the stereotypes youth may have of police and police may have of African American youth.  By working together to design and paint a beautiful piece of art we hoped that each group might begin to truly see each as they really are.

The work of these participants resulted in a beautiful mural the title of which is based on Dr. Seuss’s question: “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?”.  The 10ft. x 15 ft. mural has been installed in the hallway of Franklin Delano Roosevelt Academy where many of the Boys and Girls Club participants go to school.

The community is invited to join us at the unveiling. There will be light refreshments available.
