Winter Opening Night Party

Presented by Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland at Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland

Behold a whimsical world: ladies from a bygone era stand defiantly, poised in fisticuffs; larger-than-life installations echo a carnival midway or western frontier town; skateboards transform into canvases—all delivered with gentle humanity.

Margaret Kilgallen: that’s where the beauty is. debuts during our 2020 winter opening night party.

A seminal member of the 1990s San Francisco Mission School movement, Kilgallen revelled in the handmade, creating her own visual language and cast of characters. moCa’s posthumous show is her largest presentation to date, featuring her paintings, prints, drawings, and ephemera.

Our Toby Devan Lewis Gallery will open with Temporary Spaces of Joy and Freedom, which features Tricia Hersey’s interactive installation A Portal for Rest. A child on the verge of bittersweet discovery and mythical creatures journey through videos from Leanne Betasamosake Simpson (produced with Cara Mumford and Amanda Strong). The work of Vaimoana Niumeitolu and Kyle Goen, and John Edmonds will contribute to the show’s exploration of Indigenous and Black liberation, decolonialism, Indigenous rights, and the importance of care and regeneration within communities.
