Rust Belt Burlesque: The Softer Side of a Heavy Metal Town

Rust Belt Burlesque: The Softer Side of a Heavy Metal Town

Presented by Westlake Porter Public Library at Westlake Porter Public Library

O’Brien will discuss the history of the unique performance art in Cleveland from the mid-1800s to the present day, with plenty of details from the historical center of Cleveland burlesque – the iconic Roxy Theater on East Ninth Street. In its twentieth-century heyday, legendary performers such as Blaze Starr and comics like Red Skelton and Abbott and Costello entertained both regulars and celebrity guests at the Roxy. O’Brien will also reveal how Bella Sin, an indomitable Mexican immigrant, spearheaded the local comeback of this bawdy performance art.

The lively presentation will include vintage photos, co-author Bob Perkoski’s dazzling images of modern burlies, and a Q&A. Books will be available for sale and signing courtesy of Mac’s Backs.
