Kozo Harvest 2019

Kozo Harvest 2019

Presented by Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory and Educational Foundation at The Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory and Educational Foundation

Fall is here and our annual Kozo Harvest is right around the corner!

As the leaves on our paper mulberry (kozo) plants begin to change color, we know that it’s nearly time to harvest this fiber for Eastern papermaking.

During our harvest you can learn the fundamentals of Eastern papermaking in our urban garden. Each year, we harvest this plant and transform it into beautiful sheets of Washi (Japanese paper).

While you’re here you can also visit our gallery and view our dual exhibition. Printmaking As Resistance is a group exhibition featuring contemporary artists who are using posters, zines, and other print-based media as a conduit to inspire thought and provoke social activism.

A Moral Compass utilizes the book format to explore age old issues of ethics and morality. This provocative exhibition presented by Art Books Cleveland utilizes both traditional and unconventional book bindings, materials, and structures to explore universal themes and new perspectives.

About our Kozo Garden:

The art of papermaking has a long and interesting history that can be traced to ancient China and the bark of the kozo tree over 2,000 years ago. The kozo, also called the paper mulberry plant, is the same type of tree grown, harvested and transformed into paper each year at the Morgan.

The Morgan’s Sam Caraboolad Garden is a green oasis tucked into the industrial brick scenery of the Midtown neighborhood. It is the largest kozo grove in the United States. This spring, we expanded our garden into a second lot, doubling its size in celebration of our 10-year anniversary.

The Morgan’s Sam Caraboolad Garden is the largest kozo (paper mulberry) grove in the United States. By growing the raw material onsite, we not only avoid the sizeable expense of importing the fibers from Asia, but also create a self-sustaining cycle of papermaking.
