Lerner & Loewe’s classic 1960 musical is performed often these days, perhaps because King Arthur’s idealism—his vision for a Round Table that will unite his people—resonates powerfully in our polarized era. Camelot pivots on one of literature’s great romantic triangles: Queen Guenevere idolizes Arthur but cannot restrain her love for Sir Lancelot. And this musical attracted major stars: Richard Burton and Julie Andrews on stage, Richard Harris and Vanessa Redgrave on screen. In TMTP’s multi-media concert, the score—which includes the passionate “If Ever I Would Leave You” and the charming title song—will be woven into the story of Camelot’s creation: a Broadway cliffhanger in which a smash hit of nearly 900 performances barely escaped failure. —B.R.
