A Burmese Buddhist monk who preaches hatred of Muslims is the subject of this unsettling new documentary from the veteran director of Reversal of Fortune, Single White Female, and Barfly. (It concludes Schroeder’s “trilogy of evil” that began with 1974’s General Idi Amin Dada and 2007’s Terror’s Advocate.) Ashin Wirathu’s abhorrent Islamophobic rhetoric (couched in appeals for nationalism and pure bloodlines) has been at the forefront of Myanmar’s ethnic cleansing campaign against its Rohingya minority and other Muslims. His sermons run counter to Buddhism’s foundational tenets of love, peace, and enlightenment. Subtitles. DCP. 100 min.
