RE:         Art Show at Kent State University Features Dream State Retrospective

Northeast Ohio – Area artists Rachel Truitt and Georgio Sabino III are determined to demonstrate that the American Dream can be achieved. Their collaborative exhibit “Dream State Retrospective” opens Friday, March 1, 2019, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Uumbaji Gallery in Oscar Ritchie Hall of Kent State University, 225 Terrace Dr. Kent, Ohio 44243.

Truitt’s works share her perspectives in still life representations, current goals and a vision that informs a greater connection to her art, past and future. She is a passionate painter on canvas who also loves to do large-scale murals. The viewer can witness the progression of her style, in which she acknowledges the evolution of her earlier, more realistic still life images, to a greater personal and surrealistic flow of paintings.

“I have painted since I was very young,” Truitt says. “I remember teaching a class when I was only 14, in Green, Iowa, and how to stretch a canvas to prepare it for an oil painting. I can work in almost any medium, but I absolutely love working with oil paint the most. I was greatly influenced throughout my life by my father who built homes, and my mother who is also a painter.”

As the mother of five grown children and having had a varied ‘portfolio career,’ Truitt obtained an associate’s degree in art through Cuyahoga Community College. However, she feels that she has just started to grow as an artist, bringing a lifelong dream to fruition.

Sabino’s photographic art deals with the dream state of recent historic championships in Ohio sports, namely of the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers and the Ohio State Buckeyes visits to the White House, when former President Barack Obama presented both teams with awards. He also has captured images of the Cleveland Indians in their runner-up pursuit to the World Series. These years were among some of his most memorable times — all a dream now, he muses.

Coming back to Kent State University is a full circle path for this alumnus, who majored in fine art: design and sculpture with a minor in African studies. But Sabino then went on to obtain his master’s degree in art education from Case Western Reserve University/Cleveland Institute of Art, with dreams of opening his own art school to foster entrepreneurship combining art and business.

That dream still is not lost. However, he has since joined the population of teachers who have left the profession among elementary and secondary students. His perspective on teaching youths has since transferred to the ‘young at heart’ through Tri-C’s Encore program, sharing his digital photography and art skills with enthusiastic mature learners.

“It’s very rewarding when these students discover how much they can do with the new technology, even as they’ve amassed so many life experiences,” Sabino states. “At the same time, it’s exciting to have compiled my own repertoire of images that impart an amazing part of my life — having been able to meet the people that I’ve photographed…”

Among them have been the late poet Maya Angelou, four U.S. presidents, celebrity vocalists, other athletes and politicians. Of these experiences, Sabino reflects upon the words of musician Ray Charles: “Dreams, if they’re any good, are always a little bit crazy.”

At the opening reception, Sabino and Truitt will discuss the ideas that led to their joint exhibition, and how Dream State Retrospective reflects their wishes for the future. Look out, art patrons! These two have a very fun, energetic spontaneity about them. The exhibit runs through Saturday, March 30, with a closing reception from noon to 3 p.m.
