The play tells the story of Paulina Salas, her husband Gerardo Escobar, and Dr. Roberto Miranda, all citizens in an unnamed country that is recovering from the after-effects of a violent dictatorship government.
The Death and the Maiden (La Muerte y la Doncella) by Ariel Dorfman (Argentine-Chilean-American novelist, playwright, essayist, academic, and human rights activist) is LatinUs Theater Company first full play. The script who has been nationally and internationally represented (it was made into a Hollywood movie) explores the challenges of restoring democracy and stability to a country recovering from an oppressive military dictatorship. We will introduce our audience to a play in Spanish ( English supertitles) and the participants will learn about the hardship times in Latin America during and after the Pinochet dictatorship (or any other authoritarian regime in any country that has been deprived of freedom/respect for human rights). Through the use of Latino actors, portraying Hispanic characters and the use of the Spanish language, we will engage the audiences from all backgrounds and bring pride to the growing Hispanic community in Northeast Ohio.
