Based on “The Adventures of Don Quixote,” by Miguel the Cervantes y Saavedra, this musical is a comic tragedy of mankind’s struggle to better both himself and the world in which he lives.
The musical is an adaptation of the 17th-century novel, Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. The original 1965 Broadway production ran for 2,328 performances and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Written by Dale Wasserman with music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion, the show has been revived four times on Broadway, becoming one of the most enduring works of musical theatre. The celebrated score includes “The Impossible Dream,” “I, Don Quixote,” “Dulcinea,” “I Really Like Him,” “Little Bird,” and “To Each His Dulcinea.”
Playing Cervantes (who also becomes Don Quixote) is Spotlights’ Education Director, Tim Anderson. While waiting in prison for a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition, Cervantes recruits his trusty sidekick, Sancho Panza (Declan Newton) and the rest of his fellow prisoners to act out the story of the “mad” knight Don Quixote. The story portrays Don Quixote’s quest for his Dulcinea (Stephanie Malfara) and celebrates the perseverance of a dying old man who refuses to give up his ideals or his passion.
Director Ryan Bergeron leads the ensemble cast of prisoners, who all play different roles in the story. The exceptionally-talented group of local actors includes Roxanna Bell, Adam Bowers, Ariel Brinker, John Janoch, Shain Josef, Sharon Joyce, Bob Newton, Peggy Newton, James Newton, Sarah Price, Marco Quiroz, Eli Ravenson, Ellie Ritterbusch, Addie Wisniewski, and Natalie Zenczak. Tara Corkery and Keleigh Rae Bowling serve as producers.
